SCULPTOR

Johannes Dröge

Johannes Dröge has an intuitive, deep connection to nature and to his material, stone. In the 60 years of his activity he has already trimmed and polished stones sculptures from all over the world. His respect for the environment and the timelessness of his material is evident in all his sculptures at first glance.

Silent simplicity
Johannes Dröge has an intuitive, deep connection to nature and to his material, stone. He has carved and in his 60 years as a sculptor, he has carved and polished stones from all over the world. His respect for the environment and the timelessness of his material is evident at first glance in all his sculptures. He has a special feeling for the possibilities that lie within a stone. That is why he often finds interesting stones on his walks and mountain hikes. Johannes Dröge preserves the original character of the stone and at the same time his works have an independent physicality, a presence in space. He consistently follows a line, which then gains plastic substance. A main theme for him is perfect reduction, which he applies to forms he finds in nature. He creates non-figurative, perfectly crafted sculptures with human, animal, plant and archetypal motifs.
He is not concerned with the reproduction of nature, the representation and imitation of what he has seen.

His works revolve around the theme of change as the fundamental principle of all life. His works reflect the contemplative search for pure, free form; they are stone sculptures that exude calm and strength. Johannes Dröge says: “The strictly stylised forms of my sculptures should radiate life, invite us to touch them, to ‘grasp’ them. I try to make the search for the centre, for harmony, the longing for change and liberation visible in the hewn and polished surfaces.
