Carsten Westphal wurde als W\u00fcstenmaler bekannt, weil er die Stille und die unber\u00fchrte Natur der unendlichen Weiten liebt. So reist er mit Kamelen durch Sandw\u00fcsten, um den perfekten Ort zum Malen zu finden, besteigt Vulkane, klettert auf Berge oder wandert durch eisige Landschaften. Der mystische Zauber unber\u00fchrter Naturlandschaften ist die Quelle der Inspiration f\u00fcr Westphals Kunst. Die Strukturen der W\u00fcsten, die rauen Felsformationen der Berge, das zerkl\u00fcftete Eis der Gletscher und die silbrig-schwarze Lava der Vulkane ziehen den K\u00fcnstler magisch an. Doch sein Thema ist nicht die realistische Abbildung der Natur, sondern das Erleben der Urgewalten und ihrer Urkr\u00e4fte und deren \u00dcbersetzung in eine abstrakte Bildsprache. Westphal taucht in die Natur ein, setzt sich Hitze, K\u00e4lte, Sonne und Wind aus und sp\u00fcrt so beim Malen die Energie der Elemente. Er verwendet vor Ort gesammelte Materialien wie W\u00fcstensand, vom Wind verwehten Gesteinsstaub, Schlamm, Salz, Eis oder Lava. Um die elementaren Spuren der Natur in der Bildkomposition sichtbar zu machen, braucht es mehrere \u00dcberarbeitungen. Erst wenn das Bild eine gewisse Dichte erreicht, entsteht eine lebendige Tiefenwirkung. Die haptische Oberfl\u00e4che des Bildes wird Teil seiner Gestaltung, ebenso wie seine Eigenschaften: Ein pastoser Farbauftrag reflektiert das einfallende Licht anders als ein lasierender; dreidimensionale Reliefs werfen Schatten, ihre Furchen wirken wie dunkle Zeichnungen. Texturen, Beschaffenheiten, Formen und Materialien der Natur sind in visuellen Gestaltungsprozessen. Ein spontan gestischer Prozess legt Verborgenes frei, entdeckt die Struktur hinter der Form. sinnliche Erfahrung von reflektiertem Licht. Im Rhythmus von Naturlandschaften entstehen Kompositionen aus Licht, Materie und Struktur im Dialog mit Farbe und Raum.
